Concealed Ductwork and Air Grilles
Ducted air conditioning distributes heated or cooled air from a concealed indoor unit through ductwork to supply grilles in the rooms it serves. Return air grilles provide a route for air to travel back to the unit. Both supply and return paths need to be planned as part of the system.
Unlike a system with a separate visible indoor unit in each room, a ducted installation relies on space for the indoor equipment and air ducts. Grille positions and duct routes must suit the room layout and the building’s structure.
Ceiling Voids and Installation Access
A ceiling void, loft or another suitable concealed space must accommodate the indoor unit, insulated ductwork and associated connections. Available depth and access vary between buildings, so suitability needs to be assessed before choosing this arrangement.
Installation planning must also allow access for fitting equipment, routing refrigerant pipework and drainage, and reaching electrical connections. Access panels or other suitable openings are needed for filter cleaning, inspection and future maintenance.
Zoning and System Planning
Zoning may allow different areas to be controlled separately when compatible dampers and controls are included in the design. It should not be assumed that every room can operate independently: the equipment, airflow requirements and control arrangement must be considered together.
Supply and return grille locations, duct sizes and routes need to be coordinated so air can circulate through the intended spaces. Closing off rooms or zones must not prevent the system from receiving the airflow it requires. Ducted systems can be considered for existing properties as well as renovation or construction projects. KMS assesses the available space, installation routes and maintenance access before advising whether a ducted arrangement is practical.
